The Universal Gospel Centre (U.G.C) was birthed out from a prayer retreat at the Presbyterian Vocational Training Centre at Chirapatre, Kumasi in September, 1991.

The prayer retreat had in attendance nine persons with Pastor Stephen Adu-Boahen, the current General Overseer as the leader.

The first ever service of the church was held at Jesus the King International School on Sunday, the 29th of September 1991, at Kwadaso Estate in Kumasi.

About a hundred and twenty persons attended this first service. The sermon preached on the day by Pastor Stephen Adu-Boahen was titled, "The God Who Cannot Be Monopolized".

In December 1991, the first harvest service was organized and the amount raised was used to purchase the land which presently houses the International Headquarters as well as the Bremang Local Assembly.

The three initial full-time workers of the church at its inception were Pastor Stephen Adu-Boahen, the current General Overseer, Pastor Benjamin Fiifi Karikari, the current Assistant General Overseer and Pastor Kwaku Agyemang-Duah, the current General Secretary of the church.

After the Bremang Local Assembly, the Sunyani, Accra, Obuasi and Konongo Local Assemblies were the initial Assemblies started between 1992 and 1994.
